Winter in Southern California is a season of unique gardening opportunities.

Funny you should ask this today because I was just harvesting some potatoes grown under avocado trees, and I was also planting seedlings of mustard and parsley under the canopy edges of some trees.
If you have any potatoes lying around, bury them under an inch or two of mulch under the southern dripline of a fruit tree here in winter and you’ll have “free” tubers to harvest by May. (As I harvested potatoes today, I replanted the biggest tuber from each plant, which will then grow a handful of new tubers for harvest in late spring.)
