{"id":10537,"date":"2020-05-15T17:14:57","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T00:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/?p=10537"},"modified":"2020-06-18T13:17:18","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T20:17:18","slug":"growing-green-finger-cucumbers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/growing-green-finger-cucumbers\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing &#8216;Green Finger&#8217; cucumbers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I didn\u2019t much like cucumbers until I grew \u2018Green Finger.\u2019 I didn\u2019t love to eat them, and I was frustrated while growing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my garden, too often they were bitter, and I never could figure out how to consistently prevent that. Insufficient or uneven watering wasn\u2019t the problem, as some suggested. The weather conditions didn&#8217;t seem to correlate with bitterness either. At last I realized that the key to growing the consistently crisp and sweet cucumbers that I desired was growing the right variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Green Finger\u2019 cucumber variety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.cornell.edu\/news\/product\/cucumber-green-finger\/\">\u2018Green Finger\u2019 was bred by Margaret Jahn and George Moriarity at Cornell University<\/a> in Ithaca, New York. Nevertheless, the variety grows wonderfully in our drier and hotter climate of Southern California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to never being bitter, what I like about \u2018Green Finger\u2019 is that its skin is thin, tender, and smooth. Some cucumber varieties are so spiny that you want gloves when harvesting, and then the skin is so thick that you want to peel them before eating. Not \u2018Green Finger,\u2019 which are perfectly suited for picking and snacking on right in the garden next to the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Green Finger\u2019 can also be harvested when the cukes are the actual size of your finger up to the size of a Cavendish banana, and they taste great at either extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/green-finger-cucumbers-on-plant-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10539\" width=\"597\" height=\"446\"\/><figcaption>Green Finger cucumbers on plant.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The seed cavity in the center of a \u2018Green Finger\u2019 cucumber is small so the cucumber is crisp through and through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plants are highly productive too, setting fruit immediately upon planting and never slowing down. Last year, our \u2018Green Finger\u2019 cucumber plants astonished me by how long they thrived and produced, and this year they\u2019re astonishing me by how early they are producing. We\u2019ve started eating them only three weeks after planting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How I grow \u2018Green Finger\u2019 and other cucumbers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know people who grow great cucumbers by allowing them to sprawl in their vegetable gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cucumbers-in-roys-garden-1024x735.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10542\" width=\"624\" height=\"447\"\/><figcaption>Sprawling, and beautiful, cucumbers in Roy&#8217;s garden.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And I know people who grow great cucumbers by training them up a tomato cage or some type of trellis. But for the last few years I\u2019ve grown most of my cucumbers by planting them near the southern edge of a fruit tree\u2019s canopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cucumbers-growing-under-fruit-tree-1024x920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10543\" width=\"568\" height=\"510\"\/><figcaption>Cucumbers growing under Gold Nugget mandarin tree.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, it\u2019s a citrus tree or an avocado tree because I water these trees about as often as I water my vegetables. I don\u2019t find pests to be a significant problem even as the cucumbers develop while lying on the ground, but sometimes pill bugs do munch the skin a bit. But who said cukes are supposed to be straight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cucumber-starts-with-c-927x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10541\" width=\"457\" height=\"504\"\/><figcaption>Cucumber starts with C.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This year (2020), I sowed my cucumber seeds on March 3, and I planted the seedlings out in the garden on April 26. These are normal dates for my <em>first<\/em> cucumber sowings and plantings of the warm season, and they\u2019ve been successful year after year. These dates should work well for all areas of Southern California. You can continue sowing cucumbers through June, and you can continue planting cucumber seedlings through July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, I have four plants in the ground to provide fresh cucumbers to my family of five. This should be enough. Last year, I only had two \u2018Green Finger\u2019 plants growing at any one time, in addition to a couple of other varieties of cucumbers, and it wasn\u2019t sufficient because we all wanted more &#8216;Green Finger&#8217;.
