I don\u2019t recall how I opened that fruit, but here is how I open pomegranates today for my kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, score the peel in a circle about two inches below the top (the spiky flower end).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/score-around-the-top-of-pomegranate.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11673\" width=\"473\" height=\"456\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Then pop the top off by pulling on the flower end as a handle and prying into the score line with your fingertips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pop-off-pomegranate-top-1024x666.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11674\" width=\"622\" height=\"404\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, slice off the bottom (the stem end). Only slice about an inch off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/slice-off-bottom-pomegranate-1024x757.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11675\" width=\"559\" height=\"412\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the bottom sliced off:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/bottom-sliced-off-pomegranate-1024x758.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11676\" width=\"571\" height=\"422\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now score the sides of the pomegranate from top to bottom along the white segment walls. There are usually around five of these segment walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/score-side-where-segment-walls-pomegranate-1024x869.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11677\" width=\"534\" height=\"452\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the scoring as seen from the side:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/side-angle-score-side-segment-wall-pomegranate-1024x840.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11678\" width=\"559\" height=\"458\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can now pull the segments apart fairly easily and cleanly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pull-segments-open-along-walls-pomegranate-1024x780.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11679\" width=\"587\" height=\"447\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>All pulled apart, you&#8217;ll have five or so hunks of pomegranate to eat. You can peel off the segment walls as necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pomegranate-segments-pulled-open-finished-1024x722.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11680\" width=\"642\" height=\"452\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not about to tell you how to eat a pomegranate now.
