{"id":12783,"date":"2021-05-28T15:14:12","date_gmt":"2021-05-28T22:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/?p=12783"},"modified":"2021-05-28T15:14:14","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T22:14:14","slug":"wheres-the-peach-leaf-curl-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wheres-the-peach-leaf-curl-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Where&#8217;s the peach leaf curl in 2021?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Earlier this spring, a friend from Fallbrook was visiting and he mentioned that his peach tree had had a lot of leaf curl last year but this year there was no infection. \u201cI finally got the spraying right!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slowly, I said, \u201cThose results might not be just because of your spraying. I don\u2019t want to burst your bubble but I\u2019ve never sprayed any of my peach or nectarine trees and they don\u2019t have any leaf curl this year either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(See that photo above? That\u2019s the only leaf I could find in my yard that showed any infection today. There had been a few more leaves infected on a couple of varieties that I&#8217;d noticed last month, but they must have since dropped.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemember the weather last spring?&#8221; I asked. &#8220;I don\u2019t know exactly about your place, but here in Ramona we got six inches of rain in March, and then we got another six inches of rain in April. We never get that much rain that late in the spring. Wet spring weather when the peach trees are leafing out is exactly what the fungus that causes leaf curl needs to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/leaf-curl-on-red-baron-peach-2020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/leaf-curl-on-red-baron-peach-2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12784\" width=\"364\" height=\"485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/leaf-curl-on-red-baron-peach-2020.jpg 430w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/leaf-curl-on-red-baron-peach-2020-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Leaf curl on my Red Baron peach tree last year (2020).<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOK,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut think about how dry it\u2019s been this spring by comparison. There hasn\u2019t been any real rain since a little storm or two in early March, and February didn\u2019t even have any rain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s all about the weather, at least for my trees,&#8221; I continued. &#8220;If the spring is wet, they get leaf curl. If the spring is dry, they don\u2019t. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve noticed on my trees and others that I see when I drive around. I can\u2019t. But <a href=\"http:\/\/ipm.ucanr.edu\/PMG\/PESTNOTES\/pn7426.html\">researchers at the University of California do<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWetness from rain, dew, or irrigation for more than 12.5 hours at temperatures below 61\u00b0F is needed for infection. Maximum infection occurs when trees are wet for 2 or more days. . . Development of peach leaf curl ceases when young tissue is no longer developing or when weather turns dry and warmer (79\u00b0 to 87\u00b0F).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should we do with this information?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s helpful to understand better why our trees look the way they do and vary in appearance from year to year.
