For example, they sowed corn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids can do this. Corn is one of the easiest vegetables to grow from seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This post explains why some vegetables are easier to start from seed than others, and at the end there\u2019s a list of &#8212; what I\u2019ve experienced to be &#8212; the easy, not too hard, and tricky vegetables to grow from seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big seeds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different vegetables grow from seeds of different sizes. Seeds that are big have the advantage of being easy to hold and place into the soil. Seeds that are big also contain a lot of energy so they\u2019re not as finicky about how deeply you sow them. (Bury a tiny carrot seed slightly too deeply and it never comes to life.) Seeds that start to grow faster are easier because you don\u2019t have to attend to them for as long &#8212; making sure the soil around them stays moist or that it stays within a temperature range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/lettuce-sown-from-seed.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/lettuce-sown-from-seed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12980\" width=\"420\" height=\"428\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Lettuce seedlings eight days after sowing. Lettuce seed is small, but at least it germinates rapidly.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>List of easiest vegetables to grow from seed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Easiest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C<em>orn, peas, and beans<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These seeds are big and they also germinate fast so I consider them the easiest of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not too hard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lettuce, greens, basil, onion, beets, brassicas, squash, melons, cucumber, tomato, radish<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These seeds are either big or they germinate fast, or a little of both, so I find them not too difficult to grow from seed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tricky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Carrots, parsley, pepper, eggplant<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These seeds are either tiny or they take a long time to germinate unless conditions are perfect so I call them tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/starting-vegetable-seeds-in-containers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/starting-vegetable-seeds-in-containers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12981\" width=\"474\" height=\"384\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Starting seeds in containers is usually easier than sowing directly in the ground because you can more easily control the moisture and temperature.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>(Help in deciding which vegetables to grow from seed versus plants: <a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/should-you-grow-vegetables-from-seeds-or-plants\/\">\u201cShould you grow vegetables from seeds or plants?\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What to do now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take away three things from this post. One, don\u2019t feel bad if you\u2019ve had a hard time growing some of the tricky seeds. (And pat yourself on the back if you\u2019ve done so successfully.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two, if you\u2019re new to starting vegetables from seeds, avoid the tricky ones at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And three, if you\u2019d like to start some vegetable seeds successfully right now, then sow corn and beans. It\u2019s early July, and the air and soil are warm, just as corn and beans like it.
