Take a cue from these Yard Posts readers who share their favorite varieties from their Southern California yards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lavender Gem tangelo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob started gushing to me about Lavender Gem a few years ago. He\u2019s got numerous citrus trees in his yard near San Diego State University, but Lavender Gem is the one he wants to talk about and the one he wants you to taste. It\u2019s unlike anything else, he says. And he\u2019s right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think that Lavender Gem is best referred to as a grapefruit but really it\u2019s a cross between a grapefruit and a Sampson tangelo \u2013 a tangelo being itself a hybrid of a tangerine (in this case, Dancy) and a grapefruit or pummelo. In other words, Lavender Gem is mostly grapefruit with a bit of tangerine mixed into its parentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To further complicate the Lavender Gem variety, it also goes by the name <a href=\"https:\/\/citrusvariety.ucr.edu\/citrus\/wekiwa.html\">Wekiwa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than that, cut open you discover a stunning coloring to its flesh, sometimes amber, sometimes tie-dye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Lavender-Gem-or-Wekiwa-tangelo-cut-open.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Lavender-Gem-or-Wekiwa-tangelo-cut-open.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14561\" width=\"559\" height=\"430\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Lavender Gem from Bob&#8217;s tree beside Washington navel orange.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The taste is slightly sweeter than a typical grapefruit but still contains a background of grapefruit flavor. It\u2019s a seedy fruit. Bob uses only one word to describe it though: \u201cExquisite!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tahoe Gold mandarin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rick has grown many of his citrus trees from seeds that he sowed and then grafted. He has countless varieties on his hillside property overlooking Mission Valley in San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rick especially has a diversity of mandarins, but there\u2019s something about Tahoe Gold that is over the top for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarins-on-tree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarins-on-tree.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14555\" width=\"699\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarins-on-tree.jpg 699w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarins-on-tree-480x268.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 699px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Tahoe Gold mandarins on one of Rick&#8217;s trees.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/citrusvariety.ucr.edu\/citrus\/tde3.html\">Tahoe Gold<\/a> is one of three mandarins that was bred at the University of California, Riverside by hybridizing Temple tangor (a tangerine crossed with orange), Dancy and Encore mandarins. Rick grows all three \u2013 the other two being called Shasta Gold and Yosemite Gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March, I ate a few Tahoe Golds with Rick at his house. He had picked some and placed them in the refrigerator before I arrived. It was a warm day and this made them taste even more refreshing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruit has one of the deepest orange rinds I\u2019ve seen of any citrus. Unfortunately, the rind does not peel easily. That\u2019s the only downside of Tahoe Gold I could detect though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarin-cut-open.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Tahoe-Gold-mandarin-cut-open.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14556\" width=\"626\" height=\"260\"\/><\/a><figcaption>One of Rick&#8217;s Tahoe Golds sliced open.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruit inside is wonderful, with segments that have very thin, delicate membranes that can barely contain the bursting amount of juice within. I was not able to eat a Tahoe Gold without getting juice all over. The juice has far more tangerine than orange flavor, and the juice\u2019s rich flavor is what Rick likes most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cocktail pummelo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My neighbor Lori has a dozen or so citrus trees, but she\u2019s most enthusiastic about the Cocktail. Like so many modern-day citrus varieties, Cocktail is a hybrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what the researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/citrusvariety.ucr.edu\/citrus\/cocktail.html\">U.C. Riverside say<\/a> about it: \u201cCocktail is actually a hybrid of Siamese Sweet pummelo and Frua mandarin. The cross was made at Riverside, possibly in the 1950s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, since Cocktail is not quite as big as a pummelo, it is sometimes called a grapefruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Call it whatever you want, it tastes like no other citrus I\u2019ve ever experienced. It\u2019s very seedy so it\u2019s best used for juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Cocktail-pummelo-hybrid-cut-open.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Cocktail-pummelo-hybrid-cut-open.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14558\" width=\"478\" height=\"447\"\/><\/a><figcaption>Cocktail pummelo hybrid from neighbor Lori&#8217;s tree.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And the juice is so thick and orange and sweet that it tastes artificial. The first time I tasted it, I thought of Kool-Aid. Sometimes my family uses it straight to make popsicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kishu mandarin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have likely already read that I\u2019m a fan of Kishu mandarins, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/the-best-fruit-tree-for-kids-and-the-winner-is-kishu\/\">my children are even bigger fans<\/a>. But we are not alone. Two Yard Posts readers wrote in to give two thumbs up for the Kishu trees in their yards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doug says, \u201cI have to vote for the Kishu Mini. It\u2019s not that it\u2019s your kids\u2019 favorite, though they\u2019re right, it\u2019s the flavor. A friend I went to high school with is a second generation nurseryman whose local nursery (West Valley Nursery) has been in business about 70 years, and he says Kishu is his favorite too. . . When examining the citrus selection, a polite salesman chatted me up and said, \u2018Have you ever tasted a Kishu mandarin? It will be your favorite, without a doubt.\u2019 He was so convincing, I walked out with a 5 gallon Kishu and am happy to report, he is 100% right. It feels good to know we\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to buy these trees<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in planting any of these varieties in your yard, a good nursery nearby should be able to special order any one of them if they\u2019re not currently in stock. These are not extremely rare varieties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fourwindsgrowers.com\/\">Four Winds Growers<\/a>. They\u2019re located in Northern California and ship all over California, and some other U.S. states as well.
