I was touring groves, talking to farmers and researchers, stuffing my head with more than I could process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I took photos. And here I share some with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My morning began with an offshore breeze at Brokaw Nursery and Long Canyon Ranch in Ventura, as hundreds of avocado farmers, enthusiasts, and industry folks arrived for the 108th Annual Meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/californiaavocadosociety.com\/\">California Avocado Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Brokaw-entrance-Long-Canyon-Ranch-CAS-annual-meeting-2023-edited.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Canyon Ranch<\/a> are planted close together and on berms that run down the slope in order to aid water drainage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Brokaw is testing new rootstocks gleaned from around the world to gauge how they do in California conditions. Do you notice the trees in the middle growing poorly? Sometimes it&#8217;s the rootstock&#8217;s fault.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After the California Avocado Society&#8217;s Annual Meeting at Brokaw was finished, I drove east to <a href=\"https:\/\/brokawranches.com\/\">Cheravo Ranch<\/a> in Santa Paula, where ranch manager Nathan Lurie gave me a tour. Like Brokaw&#8217;s Long Canyon Ranch, he grows his trees on berms oriented up and down the slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Schoustra-berms-down-slope-and-wood-chips.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"506\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Schoustra-berms-down-slope-and-wood-chips.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18466\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.976284584980237;width:705px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Schoustra-berms-down-slope-and-wood-chips.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Schoustra-berms-down-slope-and-wood-chips-980x496.jpg 980w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Schoustra-berms-down-slope-and-wood-chips-480x243.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">But no erosion here because of a deep mulch of wood chips.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen an avocado grove covered so thickly in wood chips as John Schoustra&#8217;s. And the trees clearly enjoy it. In fact, he says he doesn&#8217;t find the need to add fertilizer. I had a three-hour drive back to San Diego, but I never even turned on the radio because my mind remained busy reviewing and trying to understand all that I&#8217;d seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was 13 photos.
