{"id":21379,"date":"2024-08-30T18:45:08","date_gmt":"2024-08-31T01:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/?p=21379"},"modified":"2025-11-07T11:35:03","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T19:35:03","slug":"why-only-one-variety-of-avocado-in-grocery-stores-with-mary-lu-arpaia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/why-only-one-variety-of-avocado-in-grocery-stores-with-mary-lu-arpaia\/","title":{"rendered":"Why only one variety of avocado in grocery stores? with Mary Lu Arpaia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A thought-provoking, one-minute clip of Mary Lu Arpaia, who heads the <a href=\"https:\/\/avocado.ucr.edu\/\">University of California&#8217;s avocado breeding program<\/a>, setting the context and asking the question during last week&#8217;s seminar of the <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaavocadosociety.org\/seminars.html\">California Avocado Society<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe id=\"odysee-iframe\" style=\"width:100%; aspect-ratio:16 \/ 9;\" src=\"https:\/\/odysee.com\/$\/embed\/@GregAlder:6\/why-only-one-variety-of-avocado-in:a?r=HJYybPpruRgdFoPoTwFLhZmq3E9orRRP\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From my point of view, there is no single answer, but here are parts of the answer (could also be considered parts of the problem):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Hass is a very good variety<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; California Avocado Commission doesn&#8217;t want non-Hass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Hass Avocado Board doesn&#8217;t want non-Hass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Major packinghouses (middlemen) don&#8217;t want non-Hass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Mexico can&#8217;t legally import non-Hass<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important note:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most other avocado-producing regions of the world, grocery stores carry varieties other than Hass at appropriate times during the year.
