Grow them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over the years I\u2019ve noticed a phenomenon that I have to share because I hear some parents talk of their kids not wanting to eat vegetables. One thing that I guarantee will increase their consumption is allowing them to graze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grow what you want them to eat, and then give them access. They will take it from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My kids reluctantly eat broccoli if we put it on their plate at dinner time, but they\u2019ll be out in our yard on their own and kneel down and munch on a head of broccoli still growing on the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-broccoli-on-plant.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-broccoli-on-plant.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22155\" style=\"width:358px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-broccoli-on-plant.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-broccoli-on-plant-480x521.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 700px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just my kids. Their friends come over and graze in the garden similarly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it that they see my kids doing it and want to join? Maybe at first, but then they continue as if they genuinely enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-cilantro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-cilantro.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22161\" style=\"width:399px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-cilantro.jpg 800w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/kids-eat-cilantro-480x486.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This is not staged. My kids and their friends were really eating mouthfuls of cilantro together.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it being out in nature that encourages them to eat vegetables in the garden? The fresh air and breeze, the sound of birds, the smell of flowers &#8212; it somehow calms and pleases them, such that they&#8217;re open to exploring what things taste like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is certainly an element of discovery when snacking in the yard. &#8220;What?! Peanuts grow under the dirt?!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/cass-beet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"764\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/cass-beet.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22154\" style=\"width:369px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/cass-beet.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/cass-beet-480x524.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 700px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Wow! Beets make your mouth look bloody!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it that there is no junk food alternative while they&#8217;re out in the garden? They&#8217;re hungry, there are no potato chips around, so they eat the peas? That&#8217;s probably part of it, but it doesn&#8217;t explain why one day a girl who was visiting was so enamored with eating fresh peas that she became disobedient to her mother, who was asking to leave. &#8220;Just a few more,&#8221; she kept saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-peas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"704\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-peas.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22152\" style=\"width:467px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-peas.jpg 800w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-peas-480x422.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">With peas especially, my kids like to gather a few handfuls of pods and then climb onto a rock or sit under a tree to feast.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it the freshness and the flavor? For some crops, I would guess yes. Sungold tomatoes right off the vine in summer are astonishingly rich and sweet. You could never buy a tomato that tastes like that in a store. So no wonder kids are so willing to snack on them in the yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do the kids like the independence? They get to select the tomato that is their preferred level of ripeness. They get to pull up a carrot that is big or small, whichever they like better. They may even be able to choose the color of their carrot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/carrots-different-colors.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"759\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/carrots-different-colors.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22200\" style=\"width:416px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/carrots-different-colors.jpg 800w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/carrots-different-colors-480x455.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Are kids still in touch with an intuition that we adults have dulled, which is that eating straight off the plant is most nutritious? (<em>Live<\/em> food, is what I like to call it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-tomato.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"940\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-tomato.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22149\" style=\"width:320px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-tomato.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/miles-tomato-480x645.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 700px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">We always let the kids loose among the tomato plants, and even at one year old they knew exactly what to do.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever the reasons, I know that it works. If you want kids to eat more vegetables, then growing some helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are we adults different?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t think so. My grandmother doesn\u2019t like to cook meals for herself much anymore. She doesn&#8217;t even eat much anymore in general. But she still grows a small vegetable garden, and every morning in the summer she starts her day with a walk down to her Sweet 100 cherry tomato plant for a breakfast snack. Probably why she&#8217;s still so healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you already grow vegetables? Keep it up.
