Here is a simple way that I avoid that. Once germinated, the seedlings could be watered from above because then they were rooted and wouldn&#8217;t be dislodged. Or they could continue being watered from below because that would still work too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the seedlings today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/veg-seed-modules-bottom-water-FI-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"753\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/veg-seed-modules-bottom-water-FI-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26576\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3280217840754374;width:577px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/veg-seed-modules-bottom-water-FI-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/veg-seed-modules-bottom-water-FI-1-980x738.jpg 980w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/veg-seed-modules-bottom-water-FI-1-480x361.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">I don&#8217;t know why the Vates variety didn&#8217;t germinate, but I suspect it&#8217;s because the seeds were old.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fancy word for how water moves against gravity (up) is &#8220;capillary action.&#8221; It&#8217;s the same principle that allows drip irrigation to spread wide within the dirt below an emitter.
