My freezer is full of Mountain Fresh Plus tomatoes, which is irritating to my wife because there’s little room for other items. But I think she’ll forgive me in the winter when we can pull out quality tomatoes to make salsa and sauces and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past eight summers, I have played with a few heirlooms and tried out some new hybrids, but the backbone of my tomato production has come from Mountain Fresh Plus. The variety was first called Mountain Fresh until they recently added the “Plus.” More on that later. Now, let me introduce you to this fruit and plant, which I’m going to shorten to Mountain Fresh or MF from here on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Fruit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Fresh tomatoes are classic slicers. They’re about as big as a fist. More specifically, in tomato-world speak, they fall into the “maximum-large” category, which is over 85 mm or 3.3 inches in diameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are a slightly flattened round shape, and they are tomato red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flavor is good, not remarkable, just good. And the texture is moderately meaty and juicy. It’s a versatile variety in my house. We use our Mountain Fresh tomatoes on hamburgers, in salsas, in marinara sauce, diced on eggs, in sandwiches, and in lots of other ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plant<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good thing they are versatile because a Mountain Fresh plant makes a massive crop. In trials in the eastern U.S.<\/a>, Mountain Fresh outyielded other similar tomato varieties. In my yard, in Southern California, MF has equaled or outyielded other similar tomato varieties as well. By similar, I mean other large, slicer types. For example, Celebrity, San Diego, Champion, BHN-1021, Better Boy, Big Beef, Galahad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Fresh tomato plants have a dense, bushy growth habit. A compact support cage, or stake-and-string that is only waist high, can be sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This summer I didn’t even bother to support my MF plants, and they didn’t spread far and I had only a few fruits on the ground munched by bugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my inland location, tomatoes get sunburned. But the dense growth of Mountain Fresh plants helps to reduce the number of tomatoes exposed to scalding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being categorized as “determinate,” Mountain Fresh plants set their crop over a concentrated period of time, which means the harvest is concentrated as well. This summer, for instance, I sowed MF seeds on February 25, and then harvest began lightly in late June. By mid-July, we were reaping the abundant main crop. At the end of July it was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I plant a few other tomatoes for snacking and continuous harvest, but Mountain Fresh serves as the prolific producer that is stored for the off season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Fresh tomatoes do get some radial cracking of the skin near the stem, but not significantly more so than other similar varieties do in my garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I grow all of my tomatoes in the ground, and here lies my garden’s biggest challenge: root-knot nematodes. They destroy weaker tomato varieties. But Mountain Fresh performs as well or better than any other tomato in my RKN-infested dirt. (See here<\/a> for a post comparing MF to other tough tomato varieties that I grew in my yard in 2022.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Variety backstory<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Fresh is a first-generation hybrid of two other tomato varieties, NC 84173 PVP and NC 109, according to this article by Randy Gardner<\/a>. Gardner has been called the “Tomato King,” as his breeding work at North Carolina State University resulted in many popular varieties for both farmers and home gardeners. Apparently, a majority of vine-ripened tomato production on eastern U.S. farms comes from varieties developed by Gardner. (Read more about that here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gardner named many of his other tomato varieties ‘Mountain’ something (Pride, Spring, Honey, Rouge, Delight, etc.). See some of his publications here<\/a>. And see a video of Gardner talking about his tomato breeding here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was introduced to Mountain Fresh by Roy Wilburn<\/a>. Wilburn is a local vegetable farmer who has focused on tomatoes for decades. The most helpful thing I ever did for my garden’s tomato production was listen to Roy’s advice, one piece of which was to try growing the tough and productive varieties BHN-1021 and Mountain Fresh. That was in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountain Fresh is no longer available, as ‘Mountain Fresh Plus’ has replaced it. What’s the “Plus?” I read at Harris Seeds<\/a> that MFP has “added protection of nematode resistance,” but there’s no citation given and in my experience Mountain Fresh already had excellent nematode resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless, Mountain Fresh Plus has been performing well for me, just as Mountain Fresh did before it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, this might sound minor, but Mountain Fresh tomatoes are easy to harvest because they have elbows which snap easily. This is my way of describing it, anyway. Properly, it’s said that the tomato’s “fruit pedicel is jointed.” The pedicel is the stem, and a Mountain Fresh tomato’s stem has a joint (“elbow”) that is easily broken for a quick harvest that doesn’t require two hands or yanking the stem out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a plant makes a ton of fruit, easy harvest saves a lot of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re like me and try to grow all your own tomatoes, then you will appreciate a workhorse variety like Mountain Fresh Plus. It’s not a fancy variety. It’s a tough variety that stands up to challenges like nematodes and packs the freezer (or jars, if that’s your style) with flavorful red globes so that you never have to buy those things from the grocery store that look like tomatoes but taste like cardboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
