This struck me the other day when my wife was helping in the garden and I saw her do what we all instinctively do to a weed: rip it out of the ground. That&#8217;s generally a fine thing to do with a small weed, but this was a big weed like in the photo above.<\/p>\n<p>What then? The upturning of the soil just brought dormant weed seeds near the surface and gave them a chance at life, and so the effectiveness of the mulch in that spot has been negated. In essence, future weeds have been created.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, the big roots could&#8217;ve been left in the soil to decompose<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which benefits the soil by feeding the tiny organisms that live there (those organisms will make nutrients available to future plants), and by improving the soil\u2019s texture and water-holding capacity through the additional organic matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(See my post <a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/dont-dig-garden\/\">\u201cDon\u2019t dig in your garden\u201d<\/a> for more on why it&#8217;s good to leave your garden dirt undug.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>How to leave the roots be while still eliminating the weed? However, be aware\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that it doesn\u2019t work on every weed. A few weeds will regrow from underground parts. Bermuda grass is an example. It has parts underground (rhizomes) that are attached to even deeper roots which all must be entirely dug up. This is best done by moistening the soil and then using a garden fork.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: block; text-align: center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7708209615665595\" data-ad-slot=\"5340255544\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p><b>Seeds must go<\/b><\/p>\n<p>As I thought about smart weeding, three other approaches came to mind, one being the removal of weed seeds.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If a weed has formed seeds, then take them away. Put the seeds or the whole weed in the trash, in another part of the yard where you don\u2019t care about weeds, maybe compost them, whatever. That one little guy &#8212; 250,000 seeds! I will pull it before it forms seeds. But if it escapes my notice like the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grass type of weed below, then I&#8217;ve got to be careful about getting its seeds out of the area, not letting them fall on the ground:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3350\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-300x218.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-600x435.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-768x557.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-1024x743.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds-1080x783.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/weed-with-seeds.jpg 1827w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Mulch suppresses<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dirt hates to be naked. If you don\u2019t cover it with the plants of your choosing, then nature will cover it with whatever blows in: weeds. But if you clothe the dirt preemptively, then fewer weeds can get a roothold, and those that do are easy to see and easy to uproot (or cut below the waist).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below my fruit trees I keep a mulch of wood chips. Below my vegetables I keep wood chips or sometimes compost. I still get some weeds among my vegetables, of course, but the mulch definitely suppresses them, I\u2019ve observed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t believe that a mulch of wood chips \u201crobs the soil of nitrogen,\u201d as is claimed in many otherwise excellent gardening books, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1879906406\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=greald-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=1879906406&amp;linkId=c387f89353b98b66378b254f55654f70\"><em>Pests of the Garden and Small Farm<\/em> by Mary Louise Flint<\/a>. It\u2019s as simple as this: After clearing the ground of weeds, water the area with at least a half inch. (You can use a tuna can to measure that.) Wait one to two weeks for weeds to emerge, then pull them or hoe them shallowly. Weed seeds only grow if they\u2019re in the top inch or so of soil. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now sow or plant without disturbing the soil more than necessary. Or if you really want to make the seedbed &#8220;stale,&#8221; then repeat the process one more time before sowing or planting. Right: Hoed very shallowly; ready for sowing or planting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(For more on this technique, see this nice graphic titled, <a href=\"http:\/\/horticulture.ucdavis.edu\/main\/FennimoreSeedbedPrep.pdf\">&#8220;Stale Seedbed Preparation,&#8221;<\/a> by Steve Fennimore of UC Davis.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stale seedbedding is particularly useful to do before you sow seeds of plants like carrots or onions since you sow them close together and the plants are delicate. Trying to hoe or pull weeds among onion or carrot seedlings is tedious to say the least. I sowed onion seeds directly in the ground without using the stale seedbed technique once, and I will never do it again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spring time in Southern California is boom time for weeds, as winter weeds like grasses and cheeseweed are setting seed at the same time that summer weeds like purslane and spurge emerge.
