How to prepare it for my absence?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I worked extra hard for this September\u2019s vacation because it was going to be a full three weeks long. And I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019ve found that the preparation boils down to managing two main things: getting water to all plants, and giving special care to young plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Watering while on vacation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having all plants watered on an automatic system is ideal. Finally, this year, I had about 75% of the yard watered automatically. And almost all automatically watered plants grew well while we were away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When programming the watering schedule for our weeks away, I set it to water a bit more than I would have if we had been home.\u00a0 I knew a heat wave was likely, and I wouldn\u2019t be around to add the extra water at that precise time. This programming turned out to be a smart decision, judging by the weather that followed (near 100 two times during those three weeks) and the overall perky look of the plants upon returning home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the plants that I was not able to water automatically, they all survived. I mulched them thickly and watered them deeply prior to leaving. That was the best I could do under the circumstances. These plants include all of my deciduous fruit trees as well as my grapevines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trees are watered with micro-sprinklers while the grapes are watered with drip emitters, and the trees fared better than the grapes, reminding me of the fact that drip irrigation creates comparatively small root zones and less resilient plants. It would have been smart for me to put the grapevines on automatic watering or add more drip emitters.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4160\" style=\"width: 284px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DIG-hose-end-timer-irrigation.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4160\" class=\" wp-image-4160\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DIG-hose-end-timer-irrigation-248x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DIG-hose-end-timer-irrigation-248x300.jpg 248w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DIG-hose-end-timer-irrigation-600x727.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DIG-hose-end-timer-irrigation.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DIG hose-end irrigation timer.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In fact, I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00YFOZUS4\/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=greald-20&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00YFOZUS4&amp;linkId=cdfb5ac88a03d9081daf3de10af5398b\">this hose-end automatic watering device made by DIG<\/a>\u00a0that I could have installed &#8212; should have installed. These things only cost about $30 and can save a lot of time, work, and grapevines. Next time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>New plantings<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not wanting to lose three weeks of turning the sun\u2019s energy into food, I sowed a variety of vegetable seeds before leaving. Some of them thrived while others completely failed. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the small seeds failed: lettuce, carrots, greens, broccoli, and cauliflower. Such small seeds need very attentive (frequent) watering in summer while they\u2019re germinating and soon after. Most of these seeds had just germinated when we departed. At that point, they were left on the watering schedule of mature vegetables, which was only three times per week. This was too infrequent. In the future, I will only sow small-seeded vegetables three weeks or more before taking a summer vacation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the big seeds performed well. The ones that grew well were those I\u2019d put shade cloth over. See, for example, this avocado seedling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4155\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado-279x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado-279x300.jpg 279w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado-600x644.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado-768x825.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/seedling-avocado.jpg 838w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, the ones that got burned were bananas, and bananas are tough; they will recover well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, what about that scratched up honeydew melon at the top? That was how a possum left its mark while we were away.
