Here are ten photos that capture aspects of this past summer, with captions that I&#8217;ve trimmed and trimmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the photo above: It&#8217;s easy to start an asparagus patch, but have you ever tried stopping one? Even though I no longer water it, mine refuses to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Princess-grapes-707x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5923\" width=\"311\" height=\"450\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We had two grapevines fruit for the first time this summer, both of which were delicious. This one is called Princess. And down below is Flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Flame-grapes-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5917\" width=\"338\" height=\"450\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, I&#8217;d always removed fruit or pruned when a branch on an avocado tree set too much, but I&#8217;m hungry this year &#8212; after losing hundreds of avocados in last summer&#8217;s record heat wave &#8212; so now I&#8217;m trying to keep every last fruit on this Reed avocado tree by propping branches. Will I pay for my greed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/prop-Reed-avocado-branch-with-much-fruit-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5913\" width=\"341\" height=\"454\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>My daughter is learning to talk, and one of her first words has been &#8220;pluot.&#8221; She is addicted. Here she is eating a Flavor King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Reeve-Flavor-King-pluot-712x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5932\" width=\"327\" height=\"470\"\/><figcaption>(Her brothers painted her face.)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is the tree from which she picked the pluot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Flavor-King-pluot-tree-784x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5919\" width=\"348\" height=\"454\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The tree is holding its fruit surprisingly late. I&#8217;m guessing she&#8217;ll still be enjoying a few into October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Utah-Sweet-pomegranates-1024x769.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5918\" width=\"503\" height=\"377\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pomegranates are pretty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/watermelon-unirrigated-820x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5914\" width=\"355\" height=\"444\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I took a picture of this watermelon and my camera read the design on its rind as a QR code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/avocado-graft-1024x858.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5916\" width=\"463\" height=\"387\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I did more grafting than usual back in the spring, and some have grown out well this summer.
