GEM<\/strong> is a cream-of-the-crop avocado that was selected by G<\/strong>ray E<\/strong>dward\u00a0M<\/strong>artin while working for the University of California avocado breeding program.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The GEM avocado is slightly larger and rounder than Hass on average, and with a slightly larger and pointier seed. The skin of GEM is a bit thicker than Hass, and it has a shimmering speckle to it when unripe. As the fruit ripens, it turns black. The texture and flavor of GEM are world class. It is one of my favorite eating avocados, with a meaty texture and a nutty and salty flavor, and it reaches this level each year in Southern California around mid April through May, and even into June.<\/p>\r\n

GEM avocados that aren’t so pretty on the outside but will be delicious on the inside. They have sunburn spots, large skin scars, or are very small. Most will be perfect inside but some might have small portions that need to be cut out. These are the avocados that would not be attractive on a store shelf but are still totally worth eating. The farmer eats them.<\/p>\n

These GEM avocados were harvested from BalMar Farms in Fallbrook. These avocados are clean, as the trees at BalMar Farms have never been sprayed. The land around the avocado trees are not sprayed with herbicides either.<\/p>\n

I’ll fit as many avocados as I can into the box — that will be 9-12, for a total weight of about 6 pounds.<\/p>\n

Shipping is on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 23 and 24.<\/p>\n
