{"id":26076,"date":"2026-04-20T19:12:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T02:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/?post_type=product&#038;p=26076"},"modified":"2026-04-21T12:29:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T19:29:53","slug":"pinkerton-carmen-gem-avocados","status":"publish","type":"product","link":"https:\/\/gregalder.com\/yardposts\/product\/pinkerton-carmen-gem-avocados\/","title":{"rendered":"Pinkerton, Carmen, GEM avocados"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinkerton originated about 1961 as a seedling on the property of John Pinkerton in Ventura.\u00a0<\/span>The fruit is more elongated compared to Hass. Pinkerton&#8217;s seed is very small, its skin remains green when ripe, and it takes longer than Hass to ripen &#8212; two to three weeks after harvest.<\/p>\n<p>Carmen avocados are very similar to Hass, as Carmen originated as a natural mutation found on a Hass tree in Mexico. The Carmen tree, however, has a different growing and flowering behavior. The tree is bushier, and in some locations it makes multiple crops per year.<\/p>\n<p>GEM is a cream-of-the-crop avocado that was selected by <strong>G<\/strong>ray <strong>E<\/strong>dward\u00a0<strong>M<\/strong>artin while working for the University of California avocado breeding program. The avocado is slightly larger and rounder than Hass on average, and with a slightly larger and pointier seed. The skin of GEM is a bit thicker than Hass, and it has a shimmering speckle to it when unripe. As the fruit ripens, it turns black. It is one of my favorite eating avocados, with a meaty texture and a nutty flavor.<\/p>\n<p>These are clean avocados.
