This is what we currently have.
I included vines and berries because they’re also sweet and perennial.
What I notice is that the summer is laden while the winter is light. At least we do have fruit all year, and Fuji and Pink Lady apples keep in the fridge well, and Kishu mandarins can be good through winter too. The harvest is satisfyingly spread out.
I would LOVE to see a similar chart for various fruit (including avocado) as a guide for when and how frequently to feed/fertilize. What do you think?? 🙂
Hi Lauren,
I wish I could make such a chart, but the practice of fertilizing depends too much on the product you’re using that a general schedule is impossible. More than that, I have no firsthand experience with fertilizing per se.
I merely add compost and wood-chip mulch to the surface under my fruit trees. I do this at different times throughout the year. Timing is inconsequential. I’ve never used any other products or methods of fertilization. My personal view is that fertilizer products are overused, generally speaking.
That said, any fertilizer you purchase will come with good instructions on the bag or box. Following these instructions seems to work fine, as I’ve seen when I’ve helped others use such fertilizers on their trees.
I didn’t realize it was that complicated, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, lol! There are so many products and so many people use it, I have had a lot of guilt for not fertilizing/feeding plants over the years. I thought I was being neglectful so I did start doing a little this year. Thank you!
I’m sure you’ve answered this somewhere else, regarding mulch under an avocado tree, but do I need to put down a liner first, or should I put the dead matter straight on the ground and just watch out for new weeds that grow up to then pull? I’ve prepared by pulling the grass and have a 6-1/2′ diameter circle of moist dirt. It’s a young tree, but it has enough low branches to provide great shade for the roots. I’m trying to use dead avocado leaves and trimmings I’ve collected (to be pure) for the mulch, but I’m not sure if that’s the preferable type to use?
Hi Lauren,
Dead leaves and trimmings from avocado are great for its mulch, but you can also use any other leaves and trimmings. I use a mix of anything I have on hand. My last batch was oak, pistache, grapevine, and kale stalks chopped up. Just put it all right on top of the dirt. If the mulch is thick enough (about four-plus inches), then any weeds that appear are extremely easy to pull up since their roots are mostly in the airy mulch.
Thank you so much!! I will not use a liner and not be so ‘pure’ then so I can cover faster. 🙂
Also, sorry, another question … I do have a few branches that are exposed and green.
Are green trunks the only thing that need to be painted or branches also? What is the recommended ‘paint’ mixture to use? Have never done this before, but thinking about this before the stronger summer sun arrives.
Branches too. See this post: https://gregalder.com/yardposts/avocado-trees-get-sunburned-what-to-do/
