As part of the California Avocado Society’s June 2024 seminar at Jackson Ranch in Valley Center, San Diego County, Sam Garibay and Consuelo Fernandez demonstrated how to plant an avocado tree, specifically a tree on a clonal rootstock.
(What’s a clonal rootstock? See here.)
Sam and Consuelo work for Brokaw Nursery in Ventura, and they have a lot of experience with this subject. Between the two of them, they have planted or directed the planting of thousands of trees throughout California and in other avocado-producing regions around the world.
Here is a video that I shot of their demonstration:

I learned several things, including that it’s kind of OK to pick up a tree by the neck if the nursery substrate isn’t too wet! Years ago I learned how to set a post in the ground from an old hill man. As you gradually add dirt around the post, use a surprisingly small stick to tamp it down. The process has to be more gentle for a tree but air pockets are not good.
