Farmer’s box of Fuerte avocados

$38.00

Fuerte avocados that have sunburn spots, skin scars, are very small or strangely shaped. Most will be perfect inside while a few might have portions that need to be cut out. These are the avocados that would not be attractive on a store shelf but still contain all the flavor and nutrition — so the farmer eats them.

I’ll fit as many avocados as I can into the box, for a total of about 5 pounds of fruit.

These Fuerte avocados come from mature trees at Shady Lane Farm in Fallbrook, San Diego County, harvested by me and shipped to you. These are clean avocados: the farmer tells me he does not spray anything on his trees.

Shipping is Friday, April 25.

Shipping is included in the price for all California locations.

Description

Fuerte is the avocado variety upon which the California industry was built. In 1911, Fuerte was discovered in Mexico, brought up to California, and propagated by West India Gardens Nursery of Altadena. It was the most popular avocado until Hass overtook it in the 1970’s.

Unlike Hass, the skin of a Fuerte avocado remains green when the fruit is ripe. It is slightly larger than Hass, on average, as is its seed. Some still consider Fuerte to be the finest avocado variety in the world; it is certainly one of my favorites.

The Fuerte season in Southern California is winter into spring.
