I'm Greg. My goal is to help you grow food at home, with a focus on vegetables and fruits -- especially avocados -- in Southern California. I write a new "Yard Post" every Friday.

I grafted a sir prize about 3 years ago. Last year it had about 5 babies, but they fell off. It is growing nicely and looks healthy. This year it bloomed a lot. I just looked at it and I see no babies. It is surrounded by Hass, Fuerte, Reed, so pollination should not be a problem. The surprise from Sir Prize is no fruit! I’ll let it keep going a couple more years and maybe graft a Sharwil to it this year. Maybe my expectations are the problem. I’ll try to be patient.
Im in the same boat… 3-4 yr tree, over 12’ tall and full of nice veg. Flowered lightly for the first time this year but nothing set. It’s surrounded by, Gem, Hass, reed, Pinkerton, lamb…maybe it’s providing some cross pollination to the others? I’m thinking about grafting another b onto it. Is it worth keeping?
Hello Tyler,
I grafted Hass and Reed to a neighbors tree that is probably 25 years old. The avocados from that tree seem like a seed tree but tasted good, so I grafted that to my Sir Prize. Such a witty name for such a poor excuse for a tree. It appears to be a B type. I have a Fuerte near it, so pollination is probably from the Fuerte and not the Sir Prize. As a pollinator the flowers were gone long before my Cadway Cado B type, so I see no reason to have that variety at this point. When it gets a little warmer I’ll graft Sharwil and Pinkerton to it. If you need a late flowering B type for pollination then the Nabal would be my suggestion. It is 6-5-23 and it is still flowering which will increase the yield from my A type Reed.
Hi Richard. Thanks for your remarks. I have some Nabal Sharwil and Edranol stock that I could graft from. It may be best to have a couple varieties grafted over to extend the b flowering period. The more research I do on Sir Prize the more it seems to be sir let down even after it’s often delayed production for many years.
Hi Greg, My name is Harshit Godha. I am the founder of http://www.indoisraelavocado.com.
I am pioneering avocado production in India. I lived in Israel for a month to learn about avocado farming and invited my colleagues to India to advise if we can grow avocados here.
Since then, I have imported my plants and are currently in government mandated quarantine. I have been documenting my journey on youtube and people have contacted me to buy plants from me. So I am importing and distributing plants all over India.
I have a series on my youtube channel called the Avocado Insider. I interview industry experts and researchers and share that discussion with my viewers. I have had Dr Ben Faber from University of California, Dr Roberto Nathan from Israeli agriculture ministry and experts from Netafim Israel on my podcast and have published 48 videos so far on my channel. My channel link is here – https://www.youtube.com/c/IndoIsraelAvocado
I would like to host you on my show. I have read your blog posts. I tried to contact you but couldn’t find your email.
Please let me know what you think. I can be contacted at indoisraelavocado@gmail.com.
Hey Greg,
This is a random question, but I’ve always wanted to tour an avocado farm. Do you know of any in so cal that offer tours or are open to the public? I’ve done some googling, but haven’t found anything yet.
Thanks
