My avocado trees are in bloom. I can’t help but meander the yard at every chance to see which trees have male or female flowers, to identify insects that are visiting the flowers, to check for fruitlets forming, and so on. It’s a show with new episodes arriving daily.
With the aim of giving us insight into how the flowers become fruit (or not), here are my posts related to avocado pollination.

I have two successful Pinkerton grafts onto a Sir Prize tree. The grafted branch is approx 12″ long from the graft. The branch comes out horizontally. The Sir Prize fruit is fairly heavy and that branch has approx 6 fruits approx 1″ in diameter…. There is no way that branch will support all of them…. I am going to run a supporting dowel/rod that I will parallel along that branch and into the thicker branch so that there is not so much stress at the graft branch.
Any comments? I dont want the branch to break due to the avocado weight assuming those fruits remain for the year…..
Greg: Most Excellent video you made of Avo flowering; truly enjoyed. I have a 40 yo Fuerte that has 1000’s of buds, some new leaf sets, BUT no fruit. I have a 15g GEM planted last Nov (2023). It’s 4’ tall has 100’s of buds, some new leaf sets and about 8-10 BB size fruit just like in your video. Is it the wrong time of year for the Fuerte to set fruit? Or am I just impatient? Thank you.
I have the same question! Why so many blooms, tons of bees and very few fruit?
My Reed tree just started flowering this week. I think you said yours flowers in June. Is yours flowering yet? Could my avocado picking chart be 1 month earlier than yours?
Hi Monty,
Mine also just opened its first flowers this week. It does usually peak in bloom around late May and it will usually have a few flowers left even in early July.
My trees tend to flower later than most others I see. But that’s not the only factor in how fast the fruit matures. Summer heat speeds it up, and my place gets pretty hot, so maybe yours won’t be earlier than mine, maybe.
My old fuerte tree has abundant flowering that is just now starting to form smaller than pea size fruitlets right now..
My old mystery (lamb?) well flowered about 60 days prior to the fuerte and I’m getting lots of fruitset now- small olive size. I know the wind can knock many of the fruit off the tree, but many are hanging in there.
Will have to tend to keeping squirrels away very soon! Interesting time of the season…..
Recently moved into a house which has seedling grown avocado trees which I assume was Hass seedling, maintained at about 10 foot currently.
Wondering if you have tried cincturing a seedling tree to force early flowering/fruiting and if so any notable results to share?
