Is Mayo a A or B type?
Hi Eva,
I read that it’s an A type, but I don’t grow the tree and haven’t observed this for myself.
Hi!
Love your posts! I currently have a Holiday and was just told by an arborist that I could put an another avocado in a spot that is between south and north facing walls along a driveway. it will have some shade from the adjacent 2 story house. Are there avocados that would do better than others with this type of light? Thank you!!!
Hi Rayna,
Thank you! I wouldn’t think that spot would be better for certain varieties unless you’re in a location that gets cold enough in the winter such that the wall will put the tree in shade while young and potentially damage it from cold. You might consider a taller variety that will reach up for more sunlight, if that sounds applicable. If so, let me know and I can suggest varieties.
Do you know of a place that sells trees of this variety?
Subtropica nursery in Fallbrook sells them. I bought one last week.
I too would like any info you might have where to purchase this variety, or at least have access to scion stock for grafting. I’m in NorCal…Napa valley, but willing to travel the state now that we are getting back to some sense of normalicy in order to get one.
Hi Jim,
I don’t know anyone who propagates this variety but I’ll see about budwood. Probably need to wait until winter for it though. I’ll email you directly about it.
Look forward to hearing from you….thanks.
Hi Jim,
Subtropica Nursery in Fallbrook, San Diego County has many Mayo / Covocado trees for sale right now (June 11, 2021).
Hi, I bought a Mayo and an Edranol from them today and the soil they use is very light like palm wood chips or… do I need to wash the roots from this soil and plant it or it will be ok if I plant them with this soil? I am a little worried about future root rot.
Hi Hoda,
I can’t speak for sure about your trees, but they’ve been using coconut fiber (coir) in their potting mix, which is what you’re probably referring to. No need to wash the roots. Just plant the whole rootball as is. The roots will grow out from there into your native soil just fine.
You only need to worry about root rot if the drainage in your planting hole is very slow. Just make sure you check that before planting: https://gregalder.com/yardposts/how-to-plant-and-stake-an-avocado-tree/
Mayo grows in Concord and will probably be a good variety for Napa too.
Just to add to the discussion. I found a Mayo in Concord in the bay area and posted a video with a part 1 and 2 up on YouTube.
Greg’s information and help helped us identify the variety. Thanks again Greg.
For anyone considering growing one I highly recommend it for the flavor alone! It is a very rich and unique flavor.
Worth mentioning that a 50 year old tree is huge with a wide trunk so for some of us grafting to another tree with other varieties might probably a better option and more manageable for those with limited space.
Thanks for the contribution, Gregory.
Thanks Greg. Your description of the flavor was excellent. Just when I thought I tasted it all so to speak a Mayo falls into my hands.
