Farmers box of Pinkerton and GEM avocados

$39.00

The avocados in the “Farmers” box aren’t so pretty on the outside but will be delicious on the inside. They have excessive skin scars, sunburn marks, or are very small. Most will be perfect inside but some might have small portions that need to be cut out. These are the avocados that would not be attractive on a store shelf but are still totally worth eating. The farmer eats them.

Despite being a little ugly, these are clean avocados. None of the trees from which these avocados were harvested have ever been sprayed with anything.

These Pinkerton and GEM avocados were picked on Monday, April 20. Shipping is on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 21 and 22.

I’ll pack 3-4 Pinkertons and 4-5 GEMs into each box.

Shipping is included in the price for any California location.

Description

Pinkerton originated about 1961 as a seedling on the property of John Pinkerton in Ventura. The fruit is more elongated compared to Hass. Pinkerton’s seed is very small, its skin remains green when ripe, and it takes longer than Hass to ripen — two to three weeks after harvest.

GEM is a cream-of-the-crop avocado that was selected by Gray Edward Martin while working for the University of California avocado breeding program. The avocado is slightly larger and rounder than Hass on average, and with a slightly larger and pointier seed. The skin of GEM is a bit thicker than Hass, and it has a shimmering speckle to it when unripe. As the fruit ripens, it turns black. It is one of my favorite eating avocados, with a meaty texture and a nutty flavor.

These are clean avocados. None of the trees from which these avocados were harvested have ever been sprayed with anything.

I harvested the Pinkerton avocados from Sola Gratia Grove in Redlands, and the GEM avocados from BalMar Farm in Fallbrook.
