Description
Out of tens of thousands of avocado trees, Gwen is the variety that Bob Bergh, longtime former director of the University of California avocado breeding program, chose to name after his wife. It is also the variety that I chose to plant to mark the birth of my daughter.
Gwen is an attractive avocado with green bumpy skin that remains green when ripe. The flesh of Gwen is firm, and some rate the flavor even superior to Hass. Gwen is a pleasure to eat not only because of its texture and flavor but also because its tough peel makes it very easy to scoop out with a spoon.
Gwen can be picked as early as March, but it only reaches full maturity after mid-April in Southern California. Gwen also maintains exceptional eating quality well into the summer.
