I was walking through a friend’s grove last week and this thought grabbed me: During April, some early avocado varieties are still hanging on the tree while late varieties are nearly full-sized; so if there’s a single best time to see avocados on trees of many different varieties, it’s now. Thanks for the tour! Some varieties I am not familiar with. I have officially given up on growing avocado trees out here in Palm Springs, so I appreciate all the effort he has put in.
I finally seemed to get the hang of getting these to grow. In years past I’ve killed every tree I planted but lately they seem to live. I dump gobs of dg on the ground, plant straight into it, cover with mulch, and water with reclaimed fish pond water. Everything is growing really well. No fruit yet but nice looking trees.
This was a great tour and inspirational. There’s a Nabal (I think) up in La Jolla that’s every bit as big as that giant tree by the natural history museum. I never saw an avocado tree that huge and hope it’s still there. If I can remember where it is I’ll send you the address so you can drive by. Thank you for all your great advice

Greg, the Nabal has been cut down. It was in the Muirlands part of La Jolla and the realtor from way back when texted me that the new owners scraped the lot and built a 5000 sf place. What a shame. That tree was huge. I made five grafts from you scion wood and four of them took; I’ll send pictures next.
My Fuerte barely bloomed, the Edranol had a huge bloom for a tiny tree, nothing on the Stewart, the tiny Reed is blooming, nothing on the Lamb Hass, Kona nothing, tiny Nabal nothing, but the Pinkerton had a huge bloom and has actually set some fruit. I’m hopeful that after fruit drop it’ll actually hold onto 10 or so…I hope.
Unrelated, I noticed a rather poor fruit set on many of my stone fruits this year, and they seem to be coming in later and later over the last few years.

Real shame about that old Nabal. My only guess is that not enough cold in winter could be delaying the stone fruit bloom. Your place is nearly tropical!
